DC 7120
Significant gaps — claim likely to be denied or underrated
Specialist Opinion (Highest Value)
Venous duplex ultrasound documenting reflux and insufficiencyCritical
Duplex Doppler ultrasound is the standard study to confirm venous reflux, valve incompetence, and the extent of superficial venous disease in the affected leg(s).
Vascular specialist evaluationCritical
Specialist evaluation documenting the severity of varicosities (cord-like, tortuous veins), edema, skin changes (stasis dermatitis, hyperpigmentation), and ulceration.
Nexus opinion linking varicose veins to service ("at least as likely as not")Critical
A medical opinion connecting varicose veins to prolonged standing, heavy load-bearing, or other military duties. Aggravation of a pre-existing condition during service is also ratable.
Treatment Records
Compression stocking prescription and treatment records
Prescription for compression stockings and records of conservative treatment, including sclerotherapy or ablation procedures.
Wound care records for stasis ulcers (if applicable)
Records documenting venous stasis ulcers, their size, treatment, and recurrence. Ulceration supports higher rating levels.
Lay Statements & Personal Documentation
Photographs of varicosities and skin changes
Dated photographs documenting the visible extent of varicose veins, edema, skin discoloration, or ulceration in the affected extremity.
Buddy statement from spouse, family, or fellow service member
A written statement from someone who can describe observable symptoms and how your condition affects daily life.
Disability Benefits Questionnaire (DBQ)
Completed DBQ Artery and Vein ConditionsCritical
Standardized form capturing venous duplex findings, skin changes, edema measurements, and functional limitations from varicose veins.
Service Records
Service treatment records (STRs)Critical
Military medical records showing in-service treatment, complaints, or injuries related to this condition.
