Enlarged, twisted veins usually in the legs caused by weakened vein walls and valves. The VA rates varicose veins based on the severity of symptoms including swelling, skin changes, and ulcers.

Rating Levels

You have massive, board-like swelling with constant pain at rest, attributed to the effects of a previous blood clot or similar condition.

What the VA looks for

Massive board-like edema
Constant pain at rest
History of phlebitis or thrombophlebitis
Severe functional limitation of the extremity

Common Pitfalls

⚠Each leg is rated separately — file for both legs if both are affected to get a combined rating.
⚠Not documenting skin changes like stasis dermatitis, pigmentation changes, or ulcers — these are key to higher ratings.
⚠Not photographing leg swelling and skin changes over time to show progression.
⚠Not connecting varicose veins to prolonged standing during military service.
