An intense, irrational fear of a specific object or situation that is out of proportion to the actual danger. Common phobias in veterans include fear of loud noises, enclosed spaces, or crowds related to service experiences. Rated under the General Rating Formula for Mental Disorders.

Rating Levels

Your condition causes total impairment in your ability to work and function socially. You may be a persistent danger to yourself or others, disoriented, or have severe memory loss.

What the VA looks for

Gross impairment in thought processes or communication
Persistent delusions or hallucinations
Grossly inappropriate behavior
Persistent danger of hurting self or others
Inability to perform activities of daily living
Disorientation to time or place
Memory loss for names of close relatives, own occupation, or own name

Common Pitfalls

⚠Not documenting how the phobia connects to service events — clearly link the specific fear to an in-service experience or exposure.
⚠Underreporting avoidance behaviors during your C&P exam — describe every situation you avoid and how it limits your daily life.
⚠Not explaining how the phobia limits occupational functioning — if you cannot work certain jobs, attend meetings, or commute due to the phobia, document it.
⚠Failing to distinguish from PTSD avoidance symptoms — if your phobia is separate from PTSD, it may warrant a separate rating or consideration. Get a clear diagnostic opinion.
⚠Not getting buddy statements from family or coworkers who witness your avoidance behaviors and fear responses in real-world situations.
