Rating Levels

You had one kidney removed and the remaining kidney has failed, requiring dialysis or resulting in end-stage renal disease.

What the VA looks for

⚠The minimum rating for kidney removal is 30% — ensure this is applied even if you have no current symptoms.
⚠Not monitoring remaining kidney function (GFR) for increase claims — as the remaining kidney is under more stress, function may decline over time.
⚠Not claiming secondary hypertension from reduced kidney function — high blood pressure commonly develops after nephrectomy and is a separately ratable condition.
⚠The surgical scar may warrant a separate rating — painful or unstable scars from the nephrectomy can be rated under scar diagnostic codes.
