A brain disorder that causes overwhelming daytime drowsiness and sudden attacks of sleep. The VA rates narcolepsy by analogy to seizure disorders based on the frequency and severity of sleep attacks.

Rating Levels

You average at least 1 major sleep attack per day or more than 10 minor sleep attacks per week.

What the VA looks for

At least 1 major sleep attack per day
Or more than 10 minor sleep attacks per week
Comprehensive sleep attack log
Severe occupational and daily living impairment
Multiple treatment failures documented

Common Pitfalls

⚠Not getting a Multiple Sleep Latency Test (MSLT) or polysomnography to confirm the diagnosis — the VA requires objective testing.
⚠Not documenting the frequency of sleep attacks with a detailed log — the rating depends on how often attacks occur.
⚠Not reporting cataplexy (sudden muscle weakness) and other associated symptoms like sleep paralysis and hallucinations.
⚠Not connecting narcolepsy to in-service events such as TBI, vaccinations, or other neurological injuries.
