Diabetes Insipidus

A condition where your body cannot properly control water balance, causing you to produce large amounts of dilute urine and feel extremely thirsty. This is different from diabetes mellitus (sugar diabetes). The VA rates diabetes insipidus based on how well treatment controls your symptoms.

Rating Levels

Your diabetes insipidus does not respond to treatment and causes severe complications throughout your body, preventing you from performing daily activities or working.

What the VA looks for

Refractory to all treatment options
Severe systemic complications (renal damage, cardiovascular instability)
Frequent hospitalizations for life-threatening dehydration
Persistent dangerous electrolyte levels
Unable to perform routine daily activities
Precludes employment

Common Pitfalls

⚠Confusing diabetes insipidus with diabetes mellitus (sugar diabetes) — these are completely different conditions. Make sure your medical records clearly specify "diabetes insipidus" with the correct diagnostic code.
⚠Not keeping a log of daily fluid intake and urine output — the VA uses these numbers to determine severity. Track how much you drink and how often you urinate, especially at night.
⚠Not documenting how nighttime urination affects your sleep and daytime functioning — if you wake up multiple times per night, record it and tell your doctor how it affects your energy, concentration, and ability to work.
⚠Not getting regular blood tests for sodium and electrolyte levels — abnormal sodium levels (hypernatremia) are key evidence for higher ratings. Request these labs at every visit.
⚠Not connecting diabetes insipidus to service-related causes such as head injuries, brain surgery, or pituitary damage from military service — a nexus letter linking the condition to service is often needed.
